Overview

Mission San Rafael Arcángel was founded in 1817 as a hospital “sub-mission” for sick Native Americans, California’s first sanitarium, and gained full mission status in 1822. The current chapel is a 1949 replica of the original, and a small museum in nearby Mission San Rafael tells the story.
