Overview
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá, founded July 16, 1769 by Junípero Serra, was the first mission in California, established in an area long occupied by the Kumeyaay. The current church, the fifth on the site, is the 19th-century reconstruction, and it has a small museum, gardens, and the Padre Luis Jayme Museum. It was elevated to a minor basilica in 1976, is an active parish and is in Mission Valley.
