Overview

The Phantom Ranch is one of the most unique and sought-after destinations in the National Park System, situated at the bottom of Grand Canyon within the scenic confines of Bright Angel Canyon. Designed by renowned architect Mary Colter and opened in 1922, the rustic retreat offers a rare opportunity to spend the night deep below the canyon rim amid soaring rock walls, cottonwood trees, and the nearby waters of Bright Angel Creek. Accessible only by foot, mule, or river trip, the ranch has long served as a haven for adventurers seeking to experience the immense scale and beauty of the Grand Canyon beyond its famous overlooks.

Visitors who reach Phantom Ranch are rewarded with a setting unlike any other in the American Southwest. Historic stone-and-wood cabins, a communal canteen, and a peaceful creekside environment create a welcoming atmosphere after the demanding journey into the canyon. The ranch also serves as a base for exploring nearby trails, the Colorado River corridor, and surrounding geological wonders that reveal nearly two billion years of Earth history. Whether arriving after a challenging hike or as part of a multi-day canyon adventure, guests discover a destination that embodies both the rugged spirit and enduring appeal of Grand Canyon National Park.
