Overview

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a dramatic Roman Catholic chapel built into the red rock buttes of Sedona, and one of the city’s most visited landmarks. A 90-foot iron cross forms the front of the modern chapel, which sits at the base of a 1,500-foot cliff and seats about 150 people. A long, curved ramp leads up from the parking area, and inside, the cross holds the altar.

Local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude was inspired by the newly built Empire State Building in 1932 to build such a church. After a plan in Budapest, with the help of Lloyd Wright, was abandoned because of World War II, she built it in Arizona, completing it in 1956.
