Overview

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a 48-mile ribbon of protected river and forest winding through Atlanta's northern suburbs. Established in 1978, it is made up of 15 park units linked by the river, whose cool, clear water offers paddling and tubing within minutes of the city. Remnants of old mills and Civil War sites are scattered along the corridor.

The Island Ford Visitor Center, in a historic lodge, is the main hub for maps, passes, and exhibits. More than 60 miles of trails range from easy riverside strolls to forested hikes.
