Overview
The Portland Japanese Garden in Washington Park is a 12-acre garden with eight garden spaces and a cultural village, named the finest Japanese garden outside Japan by the Japanese ambassador and, in a 2013 survey, the finest in North America. It was inspired by Portland's 1958 sister-city relationship with Sapporo, and a 2017 expansion added 3.4 acres.
The Gardens
- Strolling Pond Garden: the largest, with a moon bridge and koi
- Tea Garden: an authentic tea house
- Sand and Stone Garden (karesansui): raked sand with weathered stones
- Flat Garden and Natural Garden: a daimyo villa style and a woodland with waterfalls
- Cultural Crossing (2017): the Entry Garden, Ellie M. Hill Bonsai Terrace, and the tiny Tsubo-Niwa
