Overview

Haystack Rock is a 235-foot basalt sea stack on Cannon Beach, one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Oregon coast. It formed from lava flows 15-16 million years ago. At low tide, you can walk out to the tide pools at its base to see sea stars, anemones, and crabs, and it is a bird refuge where tufted puffins nest in spring and summer. Do not climb it or touch the animals. The rock appears in the opening scene of The Goonies.
