Overview

The Vernon House is a colonial house from the late 17th century, remodeled in 1759 into the city's finest example of academic Georgian architecture, with a hip roof, dormers, and a central hall with elegant woodwork. General Rochambeau used it as his headquarters during the French occupation. The Vernon family owned it until 1872. It is a National Historic Landmark (1968) and is not regularly open to visitors.
