Overview
Beavertail Lighthouse on the southern tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown marks the entrance to Narragansett Bay and is Rhode Island's premier lighthouse. The current 64-foot granite tower dates to 1856, and the light is the third established in the colonies, with a wooden tower in 1749. British forces burned an earlier light in 1779, and the 1938 hurricane exposed the base of the 1749 tower. It was automated in 1989. A small museum and Beavertail State Park's rocky shore and tide pools are next door.
