Overview
Alcove Spring Park preserves one of the most significant historic campsites along the Oregon and California Trails. Set among rolling prairie, hardwood forest, and limestone outcrops near the Big Blue River, the park attracted thousands of emigrants traveling west during the nineteenth century. The spring itself emerges from an unusual rock formation and cascades into a pool below, creating a scenic oasis that provided fresh water and a welcome resting place for wagon trains heading toward the frontier.
The park is perhaps best known for its connection to the Donner-Reed Party, which camped here in 1846 and gave the spring its name. Visitors can follow easy trails to the waterfall, see historic inscriptions carved by pioneers, visit the nearby grave of Sarah Keyes, and explore landscapes that closely resemble what emigrants encountered more than 175 years ago. With its combination of natural beauty and nationally significant history, Alcove Spring Park offers one of Kansas's most memorable Oregon Trail experiences.
