Overview

The Kettle Falls area occupies one of the most historically important locations in Voyageurs National Park. For centuries, Indigenous peoples gathered here to fish, hunt, and travel between the region's interconnected lakes. Later, French-Canadian voyageurs navigated these waters while transporting furs and trade goods through the wilderness borderlands. Gold prospectors, commercial fishermen, lumber workers, and traders followed, transforming the site into a vital transportation and economic hub. Today, visitors can still see the dam and portage area that continue to shape travel through this historic water corridor.

Surrounded by vast forests and remote waterways, Kettle Falls remains one of the park's most memorable destinations. The area sits along the international boundary and is notable as one of the few places where portions of Canada lie south of the United States. Visitors arriving by boat can explore interpretive exhibits, view the historic dam system connecting Rainy and Namakan Lakes, observe wildlife, and experience the same landscape that generations of travelers encountered over hundreds of years. The combination of natural beauty, transportation history, and wilderness isolation makes Kettle Falls one of Voyageurs National Park's signature attractions.
