The Galena River silted up and the railroads bypassed the city, and its decline preserved its mid-nineteenth-century architecture. Ulysses S. Grant, who was working in his family's leather shop in Galena when the Civil War began, returned to the city to a hero's welcome in 1865, and the town was home to a number of Civil War generals.
